Brooks Hill Winery, the little winery up the hill, is a dream come true for Mike and Karen Hatzell.  The winery has brought them the opportunity to pursue activities that they have long enjoyed.

Mike's initial love of the land and farming developed in his youth when he would spend summers with his aunt and uncle, Barbara and Lewis Bandy, on their farm in Irvington, Kentucky.  This love has stayed with him throughout his life's journey.    While stationed in France during his army enlistment, Mike developed a taste for wine and a deep interest in the wine making process.

When Mike and Karen married in 1996, he expressed to her his dream to someday own and operate a vineyard and winery.  Over the years Mike has casually looked for the right property.  He was drawn to Brooks Hill where the Hatzell family roots run deep.  After one look at the property, Mike could envision the vineyard and winery, it took Karen quite a bit longer to see it!  In August 2006, Mike and Karen purchased the property where Brooks Hill Winery sits.

It is their hope that you will come and visit them at Brooks Hill Winery, the little winery up the hill, meet their beautiful labradoodle, Lili, enjoy some Brooks Hill wine, walk in the woods, sit on the patio, under the pavilion or in front of the fireplace and just uncork and unwine!

Spring is in the air at the little winery up the hill

Wow!  What a winter 2009 turned out to be!  Snow and ice storms, no electrical power and fallen trees!  We are glad to say so long, farewell and good-bye to it all!!!  Spring is in the air and we are celebrating a little early with the bottling of our Pinot Gris.  It is a dry white wine, best described as a refreshing, crisp, medium bodied wine with a complex floral and citrus aroma displaying hints of honey lemon and apple flavors that make it ideal with seafood, pork and grilled chicken - meaning it tastes great!

We are getting the vineyard in shape for the upcoming growing season.   It is quite an ordeal and we will be running new trellis wire to support the new vine growth.  It appears that our vines fared pretty well in spite of the very hard winter.

We will continue to have Wine School.  Check out the web page for more details.  It is a fun hobby to develop and Butch is an excellent teacher!

Most of all, Lili and the rest of us at BHW are looking forward to getting back to our normal business hours, to seeing our guests and friends enjoying themselves on the patio or under the pavilion, and planning some summer entertainment  events.

As always, we invite you to come to the little winery up the hill, bring your family and friends, and enjoy Brooks Hill wine and the spring air!  We always enjoy having your company!
