Brooks Hill Winery, the little winery up the hill, is a dream come true for Mike and Karen Hatzell.  The winery has brought them the opportunity to pursue activities that they have long enjoyed.

Mike's initial love of the land and farming developed in his youth when he would spend summers with his aunt and uncle, Barbara and Lewis Bandy, on their farm in Irvington, Kentucky.  This love has stayed with him throughout his life's journey.    While stationed in France during his army enlistment, Mike developed a taste for wine and a deep interest in the wine making process.

When Mike and Karen married in 1996, he expressed to her his dream to someday own and operate a vineyard and winery.  Over the years Mike has casually looked for the right property.  He was drawn to Brooks Hill where the Hatzell family roots run deep.  After one look at the property, Mike could envision the vineyard and winery, it took Karen quite a bit longer to see it!  In August 2006, Mike and Karen purchased the property where Brooks Hill Winery sits.

It is their hope that you will come and visit them at Brooks Hill Winery, the little winery up the hill, meet their beautiful labradoodle, Lili, enjoy some Brooks Hill wine, walk in the woods, sit on the patio, under the pavilion or in front of the fireplace and just uncork and unwine!

Winter is on my head, but eternal spring is in my heart. - Victor Hugo

Spring is always in our hearts at the little winery up the hill.  Winter has blown in cold and early this year at BHW.  Thankfully all the vineyard work was complete before the first snow.

As you all know by now, a sleeping vineyard does not a restful winter make for the BHW crew, particularly Mike and Lili.  They will be as busy as ever working in production with Butch, and around the property making improvements for you to enjoy come spring.

We have completed the renovation of the former production and storage area in the main building and inaugurated “Lili’s Backroom” with a grand opening bash in December.  At the same time we released our newest wine, Bailey’s Blush.  It is a light bodied, fruit forward, blush style wine handcrafted from Vidal Blanc grapes with notes of pineapple and grapefruit.

Butch is working hard on all of our wines and we are looking forward to re-introducing some of your favorites.  Kentucky Tradition is crafted in the age old Kentucky tradition of fermenting Concord grapes in once used bourbon barrels. Additionally, Sweet Martyne, a lush, big, semi-sweet red wine made from the Chambourcin grape, is due out soon. It has a rich dark ruby color with a nose of soft and fragrant hints of exotic fruits. The taste is loaded with plum, blackberry and black currant.

We will be celebrating Lili’s 7th birthday January 25th, 2014 (Due to weather, this is rescheduled for February 1st, 2014)!  The celebration will be held in her backroom and will be a very special occasion indeed!  Check the Events page for more details.

Wine School will begin again February 12th, 2014.  Check out the Wine School page for more details.  Winemaking is a fun hobby and Butch is an excellent teacher!

As always, we invite you to come to the little winery up the hill, bring your family and friends, and enjoy Brooks Hill wine by the fire and keep spring in your hearts!  We always enjoy having your company and Lili will be there to greet you!
